BIOGRAPHIES (M-Z)
Stacks Image 1051
IMPORTANT: Although only one picture appears for each Bio, their are probably more behind it. When you "mouse over" a picture, click for more images.
We begin collecting these Biographies a year before the 36th Reunion, which are continually being updated. We have new Bios being added as well. What a great way to see what everyone else is up to and the different paths we have all traveled. The more you share, the more fun and interesting this page becomes. Because you can spend so much time here, I added several songs (if you like music in the background) to help set the mood. The Music controller is at the bottom of the page.

In addition to your Bio, please send (up to 10 pictures) so you can have you own slideshow................how cool is that.

Have fun checkin' this out and come back often for the updates.
SALLY TUCKER (MAGEL)
KLAMATH FALLS, OR- HAPPY, HEALTY AND ENJOYING LIFE

In June of 1972 I married my H/S sweetheart he was a RIO man a couple years older then I. In 1974 I gave up a good paying job, sold all my material possessions we put back packs on and spent the Summer/Fall hitch-hiking, backpacking around the Northern U.S., OR, WA, ID, WY, MT. The people I met, places visited, knowledge obtained, what an experience! Life moves on.

I pursued my AA degree (actually have 2 of them), remarried in 1979, for 26 yrs. I have one daughter, one stepson and 4 grand children. Retired from the Fed Govt. Traveled a lot, both foreign and domestic, golfed for 16 yrs. played various courses in the U.S. But my home course was Beale AFB, CA. In 2005 I became a widow. Life moves on, I’m happy, healthy and enjoying life. I’ve met a wonderful man. I’m truly blessed.

I was born and raised in Sacramento, lived in Roseville, Wheatland, and in 2003 moved to Bonanza, OR. Lived on 5 acres in an old authentic log home built in 1979. It’s only source of heat was a wood-burning stove, and an archaic oil heater. The serenity/seclusion was awesome! Everything happens for a reason, relocated to Klamath Falls, OR. I own my home, retired, love to write and hope to publish something one day.

In 8/09 we were blessed with twin grandaughters. 11/09 we'll have another grandchild (this will be 5 grandkids ) and 1/2010 Sally will have her first great-grandchild.
BRIAN MANCARTI
ENCINITAS, CA- MARRIED, NO CHILDREN

After going to CAL for a number of years, Brian took a job as a TV cameraman in San Francisco and then San Diego. After going back to college and studying electronics, I worked for 10 years at Torrey Pines High School in Del Mar.

Again, going back to college and this time studying civil engineering and surveying, I went to work for a number of engineering firms before taking a job with a heavy construction firm, American Contracting, where I am currently employed.

Myself and my wife of 20 years, Elaine, reside in Encinitas, California.
SHERYL GREEN (MARKS)
REDMOND, OR- ONE DAUGHTER, ONE GRANDSON AND ONE GRANDDAUGHTER. OCCUPATION: RESORT WORKER AND MAIL HANDLER

NANCY MARSH (MULLIGAN)
SARATOGA, CA- MARRIED, FOUR SMART CHILDREN, FORMER TEACHER AND NOW A PROFESSIONAL VOLUNTEER

I attended U. C. Davis, both undergrad, and also graduate, receiving my Bilingual Specialist teaching credential in 1977. The same year, I married my husband, Tony, whom I met while he was a law student at Davis. We moved to the Bay Area, and I taught school in San Jose until 1990 when I decided to stay home and devote more time to our growing family. I have been a professional volunteer every since!

Aug. 2012 - It is amazing what can happen in four years! Tony and I are still living in Saratoga; Tony's law practice still keeps him very busy. Erin, 30 and now married, finished her ob/gyn residency and is doing a fellowship in uro/gyn at UCLA Medical Center. Daniel, 28, graduated from law school, (his father's alma mater, King Hall at UC Davis), and is now awaiting the Bar results. Katie and Claire, 21, are seniors at USC.

Katie, Tony, Erin, Chris, Nancy, Daniel, Claire

I have combined my teaching experience with my passion for promoting a healthy lifestyle by becoming a Weight Watchers leader. I continue to run, play tennis and golf, (still not very good at this one!)

Tony and I love to travel, and our most recent trips have been to Ireland and Brazil.
BRENT MACDONALD

DENISE GARBERO (NEADEAU)
SACRAMENTO- MARRIED, TWO SONS, TWO GRANDDAUGHTERS, RETIRING SOON

Still living in Sacramento. After high school I literally accomplished nothing after two years in college so I went to work in wholesale lumber with my Dad. Then I landed a “real” job with the State of California. After 31 years I was able to retire and start driving my husband crazy.

I have a wonderful (and patient) husband, George, who is an award-winning home winemaker, artist and Koi Pond designer.

We have two wonderful sons, Ryan (and the best thing I took from my first marriage) and John, who is married to his beautiful wife, Dina, who have given us two beautiful grand-daughters, Genna and Rossi.

We are also still fortunate to have my mother and George's aunt (both 92) in our lives. At home there are 4 cats (now that I am retired, they have adjusted to outdoor living), motorcycles, scooters and bicycles. Honk if you see us rollin' by!
MARVILYN OATES (MARVI APPLEGATE)
AUBURN, CA- HAPPY, HEALTY AND LOVING LIFE

Mackinaw Island was my first adventure, then a degree in math @ Wheaton College and a teaching credential from CSUS. My plan was to teach in South America, but instead I married Jim, had three life-changing children and developed residential real estate. I loved designing homes (the only training I had was one meeting with Mr Coonrod). Then I discovered an even greater passion at Bible Study Fellowship.

Now my wonderful adult children are married to 'perfect' partners and I have three enchanting grandchildren.

Travel (Israel during college, 32 states one summer with the kids in an old motorhome, Belize, Alaska, Europe) has been full of great memories, but my biography is more of a very analytical journey which kept leading me to Christ. I don't like people thinking my life was ideal, we all know good and evil. Its about how it ends and longing for a child-like freedom and joy along the way; 2 things I want more from than I can do by myself.

My wife and I plan on retiring in north Washington State on a floating home or houseboat on Puget Sound.
SUSAN REARDON
SUSAN (REARDAN) O’NEILL: RETIRED PUBLIC INTEREST ATTORNEY, RESIDING IN LA JOLLA, CALIFORNIA AND BUENA VISTA, COLORADO

August 2022: Rereading the bios, am amazed at how people have overcome obstacles and succeeded in so many different ways. As Emerson said, “To laugh often and love much…to find the best in others; to give of one’s self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by…a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exaltation; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have succeeded.”  Our classmate nailed it when she wrote that none of us has anything to prove anymore, but here goes:

Met my future husband Tom O’Neill when I was finishing an English Lit degree at Berkeley.  We’ve been married since 1981, when we were both grad students in Boston. Our first daughter was born a year later, and our second daughter was born after Tom’s high-tech career took us to LA, where I practiced corporate litigation in a firm with the lawyer who conceived the TV show “LA Law.”  Tom took a new job in Boulder, Colorado in 1990 where I switched to representing civil rights and environmental plaintiffs (mostly doing research and writing at home, in what may have been the nation’s first all-remote law firm).  Am honored that last summer, my law school magazine featured me — among other alumni — in an article on environmental justice.  Still, our road has not been smooth or easy. We take solace in nature and in the good people that we meet and know — and in learning as we go.

After ups and downs, Tom joined Qualcomm in 1995, and we moved to San Diego, where Tom became the first person to succeed in manufacturing the microchips that are in all of our phones today.  Our daughters went to college back East, then lived in the Bay Area for years.  Tom and I are glad that our daughters are caring people.  They are both mothers, married to wonderful men, but they now live far away.  Audrey is a Clinical Genomics Scientist.  Every workday, she diagnoses dozens of sick kids that doctors have been unable to diagnose, and uncovers new genetic markers for rare childhood diseases.  She does this remotely from her home in Burlington, Vermont, using DNA test data from Invitae.  Claire helps manage the in-house event group at Salesforce in London, England.  Last year, she won MVP for her division worldwide, and also won the Equality Award from Salesforce London for making employees feel valued and welcome, no matter what their background or persuasion.

We miss our kids and their families a lot, but we’ve been seeing them more than you might think, with visits back and forth (six weeks total in the past year).  Normally, though, we spend a week or two every month, year round, in the Colorado Rockies (at 8200’ and above, hiking and skiing) and another two weeks in La Jolla.  In between, we’ve had other trips, including many bareboat sailing adventures with friends and family in the Caribbean and elsewhere. We even chose to live in South Africa from 2007-2008 while Tom was VP of International Business Development.  Some of my best memories, though, are of get-togethers with friends and amazing Rio classmates like Leslie Wood, Pam King, Nancy Mulligan Marsh, Jamie Merrick Staskus, and Jill Adams Lasko.  The adventure continues:)

SACRAMENTO- WIDOWER AND FATHER OF ONE AUSTRALIAN SHEPARD
GREAT AWARENESS WEB SITE……………HTTP://SANCSUPPORT.ORG

Every day is a struggle. There are times where when life seems pointless, then I hear the voice of a friend or the soft touch of my Aussie.

Then I feel the warmth and caring of those around me. I feel their strength surrounding me helping rebalance my soul. I am so looking forward to our Class Reunion to see and talk to those that i had such a strong connection to years ago. To reunite with those that set off on different paths that now have crossed again.

See you at the reunion. It is coming up so fast now.

It was a bit of a surprise when I was informed that graduation was going to happen for me. I was not in class all that often. Was usually off traveling with my dad. He was Chief Course Physician for the SCCA in California. He also raced. We did this until his passing in 1977.

I did graduate Culinary School, top 5 in the class (Yes, the class had more than 5) A few years later I was invited to attend Madeline Kammens School for American Chefs at Beringer Vineyards.
Was able to take a hobby and turn it into a business. I was partners in Corsa Cycles in Fair Oaks. Even took a few years off and did nothing buy cycling.

One opportunity I jumped at was having corrective eye surgery. Got to throw away my coke bottle bottom glasses. Never knew the colors in the world were so vivid, not just muted shades. I left Morton’s of Chicago here in town to have the surgery, Was well worth the long recovery.

One of my best days is when I meet my late wife, Michline, August 18, 1999. Took one look at her and she captured me completely. She became my Sous Chef in the hotel I was working in. She also assisted in my catering business, The Chefs Creation. Another date I recall very clearly is the she passed, April 21, 2006, 6:05pm. She is missed.

I have had a lot of fun since graduation as well as many unpleasant moments. Yet, that is life.
CAROL BOWLES (SEYMORE)
CHICAGO- LIVED ALL OVER THE US- MILITARY LIFESTYLE , SON AND GRANDSON

Married a Air Force man right out of school and the military travels began first to New York, then back to Calif, then on to Arkansas to Georgia to Massachusetts and this is where we parted ways.

I followed a job to Chicago in 1988 and have since planted roots here.... Not sure why.. the winters are brutal and each year I tell myself, it's time to go home.

Enjoy all forms of exercise and trying to bike as many miles as possible this summer before we hang up them up for the LONG winter months. I think I am in denial.. this REALLY can't be our 40th... we are NOT this old ! ! !

SACRAMENTO- SMALL BUSINESS OWNER, MARRIED TO FLORITA AND HAVE A 22 YEAR OLD SON
My Work Web Site…………..

Four years in the Marine Corps fixing the Harrier jet. Deployments to Okinawa, Mediterranean seaports and a short hop to Kenya to try and rattle Ghadafi. I spent most of my time repairing Industrial machines at Mare Island Naval Shipyard and a couple of other out of state locations.

My wife and I moved back to Sacramento to care for my ailing Father. In 2004 I battled cancer for a year and then started working on houses and doing floral deliveries for my wife. For some reason I could not move or think as fast as I used to but now after 8 years I can tell the difference between a yellow rose and a red rose.
I currently live in the house that I grew up in so that I can take care of my Mom and my son who unfortunately got into a bad car accident. On the plus side it looks like I can get my son fairly healthy again at which point he can get a good job and then take care of me. He graduated Rio class of 2007 and his speech teacher was Mr. Gebhardt. Remember him from our days at Rio? On Back to school night I reintroduced myself to Mr. Gebhardt and told him that I still speak "gooder" English. He immediately turned in his retirement papers saying Oh No! Not another from the Wilhelm clan.
GARY WOODWARD
LOS ANGELES, CA- ONE SON AND PRINCIPAL FLUTIST FOR LOS ANGELES OPERA ORCHESTRA

I've been down in LA ever since graduating from Rio. Went to study music at Chapman University, then did a Master's at USC. I've been in the LA music business ever since. As a freelancer I've played for many TV and movie soundtracks. I have been the Principal Flutist of the Los Angeles Opera Orchestra for the last 22 years. I've been teaching at USC for the last 25 years, and also teach flute and chamber music at Biola University and at Occidental College.

Was married for 16 years, and have been successfully divorced for the last 14. Have one great son who is now attending Biola on a baseball scholarship (with a 92 mph fastball and a nasty splitter).

The rest of my family is still in Sacramento, so I get up there several times a year - and it is where my heart still lives.

Young Life played such a important part in my life during high school, as well as going to summer camps. After graduation I went to Dallas, Texas; to Expo '72', a Campus Crusade for Christ event. From their I went to California Baptist College after graduation and the following year changed to Oklahoma Baptist University. After leaving college my junior year I landed in Tri-Cities, Washington; got married and had 5 wonderful children, in three different states.

Began missionary work overseas in Europe during the 80's, Philippines in 87 until the present, South America in the 90's,  South Africa and India in the 2000's until the present, and in Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Tanzania until the present.

Through the course of what you just read I became a General Contractor to support my family and the missionary work. So have worked construction from 1975 until the present, where I am General Contracting new homes in Minot, North Dakota.

I have 15 wonderful grandchildren and we are all still very close as much as is possible. As you can imagine, there are lots of testimonies and stories of the things that we have seen God do overseas and here in the States.

I love to Scuba dive when given the chance, Fish, and Hunt. The opportunities of being around the world have opened to door for my photography, thru which National Geographic gave me a spot in the My Shot Section of National Geographic.com to put 50 of my photographs, and asked for two to be able to print.
God has been good to us through all the travels and years, for which I'm thankful.  Looking forward to the 40th year reunion and seeing old friends. We'll see you soon, Lord willing.
